  1. At the University I work as a Graduate Assistant at, we tell applicants to keep in mind three things to address as they write their personal statement (that's what we call it.) Why graduate school? Why graduate school now? (at this point in your life) What about your previous background (job, volunteer work, life experience) has led you to this? Unlike an undergraduate college essay where you pick a topic and write about it, in our grad school at least, they are just looking for a snapshot of "who are you and what do you plan to do with the degree?" So, give them a sense of who you are, what you've done in your life, what you want to do. If you have personal reasons for wanting a certain degree (for instance, you have a relative with a disability and that has led you to want to be an advocate for those with disabilities) it's perfectly fine to say that. Personal struggles and truimphs are fine too, as long as you don't get into too much detail and don't get either pathetic and begging (it's easy to do when you want to get in, I know! grin!) or bragging. Don't forget, the personal statement is just part of what the admissions committee is looking for. They will also heavily weight your undergrad GPA, take into consideration your letters of reference, etc. Every part of the application is important. Good luck! Kate
